Leukopenia - decrease in level of leukocytes in blood. In oncology it is most often observed when carrying out chemotherapy, being a consequence of impact of khimiopreparat on marrow (where there is a blood formation). Is a dangerous state. At critical decrease in leukocytes, infectious defeats which can become the reason of considerable aggravation of symptoms can develop and in some cases lead to death.
Reasons of insufficiency of leukocytes.
The low maintenance of granulocytes can be caused by the following reasons:
- radiation therapy or anticarcinogenic drugs;
- hypersensitivity to certain antibiotics and cardiacs;
- number of diseases (for example, anemia, marrow cancer, some hereditary diseases, infectious mononucleosis, viral and bacterial infections);
- capture of blood cells spleen.
The low maintenance of granulocytes usually causes gradual weakening of an organism. As a result violently infections develop (symptoms: temperature increase, a fever, a rapid pulse, concern, headaches, exhaustion of all organism), inflammatory processes in oral cavities, sores in a large intestine, pneumonia and infections of blood which can cause weak shock. If lowering of maintenance of leukocytes is caused by reaction to certain drugs, symptoms accrue violently.
The low maintenance of lymphocytes is characterized by swelling of glands, increase in a spleen, increase in tonsils and also symptoms of the joined diseases.Diagnostics of a leukopenia
The diagnosis is made on the basis of a case history, physical survey during which the doctor tries to find signs of the prime cause of a leukopenia; besides blood tests if necessary the biopsy of marrow and lymph nodes is carried out.Treatment of a leukopenia
Treatment is directed to elimination or correction of the prime cause which led to lowering of maintenance of leukocytes therefore the doctor has to establish and, whenever possible, remove a cause of infringement and also slow down spread of an infection. Many patient cancel drugs and radiation therapy and begin treatment with antibiotics even before obtaining results of many analyses. Antifungal drugs can be appointed. Recently the drugs stimulating development with marrow of neutrophils are used. Usually within 1-3 weeks the marrow spontaneously resumes development of leukocytes.
